Scope
PIV is an optical, laser based, technique capable to measure the velocity field in a region. The working principle relies on the displacement detection of particles used to seed and properly follow the flow of interest starting from the position occupied at two instants, captured in couple of camera frames. Knowing the time interval between the two frames, the velocity is evaluated. According to the number of cameras, their optical arrangement and frequency of acquisition of the whole system (laser + cameras + synchronization board) is possible to extract the two or three components of velocity in a two, three or four (space + time) dimensionaldomain. Since 2003, CNR-INM was a pioneer in the use of laser-based techniques to naval applications. In particular, PIV and Stereo-PIV have been adopted thanks to the unrivalled possibility to simultaneous perform measurements. To adapt properly the PIV technique to the characteristic features of naval and marine facilities, an underwater probe was designed and realized to permit to take a complete Stereo-PIV system underwater. This tool, in form of various stainless steel modules that can be mounted in different shapes to use the best optical configuration for each experiment, carries onboard cameras, lens controllers, a laser system and all the optics necessary to the generation of a proper illuminated region. Using this probe, the hydrodynamic field around ship models, underwater vehicles, renewable energy devices and, in practice, any object of interest can be investigated with a high level of precision and accuracy. |
