Executive Commitee Meeting of the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Programme

Where: Politecnico di Bari (Bari, Italy).

When: from 21/05/2024 to 24/05/2024

From May 21 to 24, at the Polytechnic University of Bari, the plenary meeting of the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Technology Collaboration Programme (IEA Wind TCP) took place. Within the activities of the IEA, this programme promotes research and technological development activities in the field of wind energy at an international level. The event was organized by Luca Greco, a researcher at the Institute of Marine Engineering of the National Research Council (Cnr-Inm), and Laura Serri, a researcher at the Research on the Energy System (RSE Spa), in their capacity as national representatives. It was attended by 70 participants from around the world who reviewed the state of the art in wind energy from an industrial, research, and market perspective.

As part of this event, the ExCo members have had two opportunities for interaction with industrial entities in the sector located in Taranto. In the morning, a visit to the facilities of Vestas Wind Systems A/S, a leading company in the construction of wind turbines, which is producing the blades for the 15 MW V236 turbine at its Taranto facility. In the afternoon, there was an inspection of the first offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean, Beleolico, built and managed by Renexia Spa. The plant, inaugurated in April 2022, consists of 10 turbines and is capable of producing approximately 58,000 MWh annually, meeting the needs of 60,000 people and allowing for a reduction in emissions of over 730,000 tons of CO2.

The plenary meeting was held at the premises of the Polytechnic University’s Department of Mechanics, Mathematics, and Management (DMMM) – a university that is at the forefront of wind energy research and participates in the research Tasks of IEA Wind TCP. The department supported the CNR and RSE in organizing the event. The event was highly successful, recording a record number of participants and receiving praise from the committee Chair for its excellent organization.

Organizer: CNR-INM; RSE.
